Better Pop Up Blocker for Safari

What Does It Do?

Better Pop Up Blocker is an Apple Safari extension that improves the default Safari pop up blocker by blocking javascript pop up windows & other annoyances that it misses like alert, prompt, and confirm boxes.

Ensure you have javascript enabled for this page and then click somewhere in this green text or white space and a pop up window will open. Notice that this is just text and not a link at all and there is no indication that clicking here will do anything. The pop ups will will take you to Google, Bing, & Yahoo all at the same time, but I could just as easily have pointed you to an annoying poker site or malicious code. Frequently, picture, video, or poker sites will annoy you with pop ups when you visit their pages and click something, anything, even white space.

White space. Click somewhere:

The method I used here can be used for anything, even a picture that doesn’t link anywhere. Hover over the image below and you will see that it doesn’t link anywhere. However, click on it and you will still get a pop up! Does this annoying method sound familiar?:

With Better Pop Up Blocker, you can stop these annoying pop ups & other annoyances that the Apple Safari pop up blocker misses.

How Do I Use It?

To use Better Pop Up Blocker, you simply install it and the browser button (a brick pointed diagonally) will show up. It will begin blocking pop ups on new page loads. A regular brick indicates the site is blocked from opening pop ups and everything is working fine. A brick with a light-grey square at the bottom indicates that the site is allowed to open pop ups.

If there is a site that you want to allow pop ups on, just click the Better Pop Up Blocker browser button and it will whitelist it for you. If you want to block it again, just click the button again.

Remember to check out the options page for more options, including a way to block pop ups from plugins such as Flash. You can reach the options page by right-clicking on any website and then selecting “Options | Better Pop Up Blocker”.

I’ve submitted it this morning to the extensions gallery for Apple. I got an e-mail reply back with the typical Apple talk that they may or may not include it.

Excellent Pop up and I agree this should be submitted to Apple.

This has really made my pop up nightmare gone, coz all of a sudden i never expected my both mac and pc to be pop swarmed in websites.. Its weird!! Need this

    Thanks :D

  • Austin said:

Interestingly enough, IE gives you the option to disable all popups (except for whitelisted ones) which means you simply must hold down a key to allow them when you wish to. I found that useful, however, Apple does not include this sort of function, and they make it simply an on/off. (On not being all that useful to begin with.)

Your plugin, though, is awesome. It’s exactly what Apple missed in their Safari build… GREAT JOB. And of course, thank you!

I have v. 2.1.6 installed on Safari 5.0.4 (MacBook Pro). I don’t know when but the Toolbar button no longer changes when it is clicked and a page reloads. However, pages which have previously been white listed do show the correct icon.

Incidentally, I have always found the button images confusing – maybe because the Safari buttons are all the same colour. I just read that in Firefox the block is blue and the square on is green – that makes things a little clearer!

Excellent! Thanks for that. Is it available in Apple Extension Gallery or did they refuse it ?

  • ownic said:

thank you SO MUCH! :3 for this, this is the most superior blocker. now when im testing safari i can have this one too.

  • Jeremy said:

This is great and does exactly what it says! I love it. Is there any way to access the whitelist options like in the Chrome version? I can’t seem to find that, as the extension says it has no settings in Safari preferences.

  • Dje69700 said:

What about the Mac OSX Lion update ? It seems your pop up blocker doesn’t work anymore…
Is an update planned ? How will we do it ?

I don’t know if it’s linked with the update but I have loads of websites which now go through my pop up blocker…

    Thx for your great work

  • Marc said:

is this project still alive ? no respone from the developer about safari 5.1 or lion.

  • Jeremy said:

It has been working just fine for me with Lion and Safari 5.1 since at least DP4. The only issue is that the icon doesn’t update the blocking status in the toolbar, but that’s mostly just cosmetic.

  • pete said:

doesn’t work for me – not even on your own test site…..pop ups just come straight through.

feel free to tell me if i have done something wrong. fully installed. diagonal brick in the toolbar

Is anything happening at all on this project ? Another equivalent tool available ?

There is a problem with trying to access blogger/blogspot blogs that have an adult content warning. It is impossible to get past that page without disabling the extension altogether. Is there a way to fix this?

  • Alf said:

I’m having issues with several websites but fiddling with the toolbar button sometimes helps – the problem is, it doesn’t change anymore so I can’t see the status of BPUB for that page. I actually found the button a bit confusing anyway, a block and another block. I could never figure out definitively whether the two blocks meant the page was blocked or just the one.

Also, it prevents the comment editor from working on Apple’s Discussions pages. The only way round this is to disable BPUB completely – which is a bit of a nuisance.

Any idea how to uninstall this software? I have been unable to check hotmail since I installed it. I wanted to remove it and test it but I can’t a way to do this.

Thanks a lot for this great extension. There is just one annoying issue: I use to browse an internal web application that makes use of frame sets and the main content is not displaying anymore. Anything you can do? Many thanks in advance.

  • SafariUser said:

Your extension is broken under 6.0.3. Please, fix this if you can. Safari’s default pop up blocker sucks ass.

  • Maverick said:

Hey, is there any chance your extension create some sort of malfunction with Facebook page? Don’t blame me, I use FB for some company advertising, and since I installed your extension I have to click on the address bar and hit Enter to view the page… othervise, it shows only the frame and a blank page… any idea??

I just installed Mavericks and switched back to Safari (was using Chrome before). As I’ve always been annoyed with the inability to selectively block pop-ups in Safari I went searching for a solution and found your extension.

I’ve installed it and can enable/disable it by clicking the icon. However, there are no options so I can’t unblock specific sites, which is the real reason for wanting a better pop-up blocker than the one Safari provides.

I hope you can explain what is going on and hopefully how to fix it :-).

    Take care,

When using Safari 7.0.1 with Mac OS 10.9.1, BPUB conflicts with the contextual menu (control-click) on many web pages. The contextual menu includes “Look Up in Dictionary” whick I use often.

Hello, great extension (on Safari 7)! But makes some websites breaks, like Yahoo Webmail, and other websites like (specifically the image gallery browser). Also block configuration popups of modems/routers.

Maybe you should add something to whitelist URLs.

    But again, great extension!

    Where’d it go??
My chrome crashed, and I had to re-install it along with all my extensions.
Better Pop Up Blocker isn’t available anymore at the Chrome Store.
What gives? Please bring it back.
It was the best one out there!

Doesn’t work, on your OWN test. Installed 2.1.6 on safari 7.1, clicked your test and there went a ton of popups your extension does not block. Guess back to searching for a blocker that works :\
